Motion that the Speaker do now leave the Chair, to go into Committee of Supply

The main budget motion, that the Speaker leave the Chair so the House can go into Committee of Supply and consider the estimates.

Budget day begins with this motion. After tabling the estimates, the government's spending plan for the fiscal year set out vote by vote, the Minister of Finance moves that the Speaker leave the Chair, which sends the House into the Committee of Supply, a committee of all members that goes through the estimates ministry by ministry. The Minister then delivers the Budget Speech. The debate that follows on the motion is the Budget Debate; Standing Order 45A limits it to six sitting days and puts any amendment to a vote on the fourth. The motion is by tradition a matter of confidence. Here the estimates covered April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027.
